In anticipation of Black History Month, our San Francisco Associates planning team began contemplating ways we might center the voices and experiences of African Americans in our prayer and reflection for our February gathering.

On the weekend of October 29-31, the Associates Leadership Team could have been preparing for Halloween, but instead, we engaged in a weekend together – virtually. The theme of our gathering was to “Harvest Hope” by reconnecting with one another, processing the graces of the summer Associates conference, and to let the goals for this year emerge from our hearts.

At the August 2021 hiking retreat in coastal Massachusetts, six participants stayed at a retreat house near White Horse beach in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Three Religious of the Sacred Heart (RSCJ) remained at their house – a rambling former rectory complete with ghostly echoes of past occupants and a friendly bat, 40 minutes away in Weymouth, Massachusetts.

The Associates gathering July 6-7, 2021 was revelatory and transformative for me. For the two days, I met in a small group with all Religious of the Sacred Heart (RSCJ) who I had not met before: Marina Hernandez, Helen O’Regan, Ann Taylor and Marie Louise “ML.”
The talk given by Carol Zinn, SSJ, executive director of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), held clarity and insights about being an Associate that opened my own identity as an Associate.
