Heart is published two times a year to highlight the mission and ministries of the Society of the Sacred Heart, United States-Canada, for a wide circle of friends. The covers, photographs of hearts in nature, symbolic of Christ's presence at the heart of the universe, bear witness to the contemplative dimension of the Society's "wholly contemplative, wholly apostolic" mission: To discover and reveal God's love through the service of education.

Heart magazine 2020 | Vol. 17, No. 2

This year has brought about many unexpected changes, from the way we work, teach, communicate and spend time with one another. The COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to the renewed call to anti-racism work, shifted our focus for this issue of Heart magazine. In this issue we cover province programs that took place pre-pandemic, get a glimpse into how Network of Sacred Heart schools transitioned to virtual learning, and contemplate our call to racial justice in light of the Feast of the Sacred Heart coinciding with Juneteenth.

Our United States – Canada Province is one of 28 provinces that make up the global Society of the Sacred Heart. Religious of the Sacred Heart consider themselves members of one international community, and this unity is important. The words cor unum et anima una in Corde Jesu (one heart and one soul in the Heart of Jesus) appear on each of our profession crosses.

Education is at the heart of everything we do as Religious of the Sacred Heart. Untold numbers of people have come to know and experience God’s love through their Sacred Heart education or through relationships with Religious of the Sacred Heart. Heart magazine, Bicentennial 2019

During our bicentennial celebrations in 2017 and 2018, our goal was to make Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne better known and to highlight the Society’s internationality.

In this issue of Heart magazine, you will read about our bicentennial events in 2018. Global Service Day and the Frontiers Conference offered international context, and the closing Mass provided joy and glorious music. We also spoke the names of those enslaved by the Society in the 1800s and walked with the Citizen Potawatomi Nation as they remembered a heartbreaking time in their history.

Even though Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat never used the words social justice or justice, peace and the integrity of creation (JPIC), the spirituality and values that she held are the same – the importance of human dignity, right relationships, preventing inequality and respecting God’s creation.

This issue of Heart explores some of the ways our Stuart Center and many individual Religious of the Sacred Heart demonstrate their commitment to JPIC by engaging with issues related to youth, immigration and ecology in their daily lives.

Two hundred years ago, Mother Rose Philippine Duchesne and four companions set sail for the New World. These were the first Religious of the Sacred Heart missionary sisters. These courageous women led the way for multitudes of RSCJ to take Sacred Heart education around the world!

This Winter Issue of Heart magazine takes a deep look at General Chapter and the calls that were discerned for the Society of the Sacred Heart. The Society welcomes all members of the Sacred Heart family to prayerfully learn, discover and to live these calls with them, over the next eight years.
